The Zhuangzi and Edo-Period Japanese Comic Books

     This talk explores the meanings and significance of the Zhuangzi in the popular culture of the Edo period (1600 - 1868), with a primary focus on the genre of "comic book" pictorial fiction known as the kibyōshi.

 

Zhuangzi Subverts Zhuangzi?  The Zhuangzi's Image in 21st Century Chinese Fan Fiction

     Due to Zhuangzi's unique status in China, his work has inspired many adaptations over the years.  In the 21st century, with the rise of the Internet, Zhuangzi has gained new vitality, who now appears in games and has become a popular character in fan fiction.  This newfound interest led to a literary trend known as Zhuangzi Pairing, BL fanarts and fanfictions I will showcase in this talk.
