ABOUT THE PUBLIC TALKS

In these public talks, Prof. SU Shishu and Prof. SIOK Wai Ting will explore the significance of Chinese handwriting and calligraphy from complementary cultural and scientific perspectives. Drawing on his expertise in Chinese calligraphy and culture, Prof. Su will illuminate the historical, aesthetic, and humanistic dimensions of written Chinese. Prof. Siok will then share insights from cognitive and neuroscience research on Chinese handwriting, reading, and learning disorders in Chinese children, and discuss how the increasing use of digital technologies may shape future generations’ reading and writing of Chinese characters. Together, they will offer participants a rich and multifaceted understanding of Chinese handwriting and calligraphy as both a cultural tradition and a cognitive process.

蘇士澍教授與蕭慧婷教授將在這場講座中，從文化與科學兩個互補的角度，共同探討中國書寫與書法的深遠意義。蘇教授將憑藉其在中國書法與傳統文化領域的深厚造詣，闡釋漢字書寫所蘊含的歷史底蘊、美學價值與人文精神。蕭教授則將分享在認知科學與神經科學領域上，中文手寫對中國兒童閱讀能力及學習障礙的研究成果，並探討數位科技日益普及的今天，對下一代中文讀寫能力可能帶來的影響。這將會是一個兼具文化深度與科學視野的跨學科對話，幫助大家從傳統與現代、人文與科學的交匯處，重新認識中國書寫與書法的價值與意義。
