HKUST Joint Initiative Wins Selection for "National Exemplary Cases of Language Technology Innovation Empowering Key Sectors"

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Nanjing Normal University, the University of Macau, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College, and Nanjing Agricultural University recently received recognition for their joint initiative, the "Summer College of Corpora and Digital Humanities," which was selected as one of the "National Exemplary Cases of Language Technology Innovation Empowering Key Sectors." This initiative stands out as the only language technology summer school to receive this honor, as well as the sole selected cooperative initiative between the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau.

The "National Exemplary Cases of Language Technology Innovation Empowering Key Sectors" is the highest honor in China's language technology sector, aiming to commend pivotal projects that make outstanding contributions to the development of key national areas—such as the Digital China Strategy, the "AI Plus" Initiative, and the strategy to build a leading country in education—through language technology. The recognition of this joint initiative fully demonstrates HKUST’s exceptional contributions and profound influence in the fields of language technology, digital humanities, and artificial intelligence.

As the largest and most influential digital humanities summer program in Asia, the "Summer College of Corpora and Digital Humanities" is hosted annually on a rotating basis among five universities across Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, and Jiangsu. This year (2026), the summer college will be held in July at Nanjing Normal University, drawing nearly 2000 applicants from close to 400 universities across 18 countries and regions worldwide. The curriculum for this session features three core thematic modules: corpus programming, linguistic statistical methods, and large language model (LLM) programming. Featured instructors include numerous globally renowned scholars.

Moving forward, the National Language Commission of China and the Department of Language Information Management of the Ministry of Education have pledged their support for the selected initiative. They will also encourage local governments to provide complementary resources, policy support, and promotional backing for the recognized initiatives, thereby driving high-quality development across China's key national areas.

Over the past few years, the School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS) and the Division of Humanities (HUMA) at HKUST have achieved a series of remarkable milestones in relevant fields. Under the platform of the "Digital Humanities Initiative," HKUST scholars have spearheaded the renowned "Public Lecture Series on Digital Literature and Culture" and hosted a series of highly influential academic events. These scholars have garnered prestigious international recognition in the field of digital humanities, including receiving funding from the Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI) of Schmidt Sciences in 2025, and being elected to leadership positions in prominent international organizations such as the German Association for Chinese Studies (DVCS).
