Prof. Stuart Gietel-Basten on Hong Kong’s Fertility Rate in Wen Wei Po 貝斯圖教授接受《文匯報》訪問 談香港生育率議題

Prof. Stuart Gietel-Basten was recently interviewed by Wen Wei Po on Hong Kong’s persistently low fertility rate. He emphasised that “the fertility rate serves as a societal ‘barometer’, reflecting deep-seated structural issues.” He suggested that policies should focus on enhancing overall well-being, not just birth numbers. While talent schemes can help in the short term, long-term solutions require economic transformation—such as developing the silver economy and health-tech—to adapt to an ageing society.
 

香港科技大學教授貝斯圖（Prof. Stuart Gietel-Basten）近日接受《文匯報》訪問，剖析香港生育率持續低迷的現象。他指出：「生育率是社會的『晴雨表』，反映深層結構性問題。」他認為政策應著眼於提升整體社會福祉，而非單純追求生育數字。人才政策可短期緩解勞動力壓力，但長遠需推動經濟轉型，發展銀髮經濟與醫療科技，以適應高齡化社會。
