Prof. Xiaolu Ma’s Book Wins Honorable Mention in USC Book Prize
Prof. Xiaolu Ma’s book, Transpatial Modernity: Chinese Cultural Encounters with Russia via Japan (1880–1930) (Harvard University Asia Center, 2024), has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the University of Southern California Book Prize in Literary and Cultural Studies. The prize recognizes outstanding monographs on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. This distinction follows the book's recent Honorable Mention for the 2025 AILA-ICLA Balakian Prize, solidifying its international recognition.
The awards highlight the originality and importance of Prof. Ma's research in tracing the complex cultural interactions and intellectual exchanges between China, Russia, and Japan during the formative period of modern East Asia.
