Our School is committed to carrying out high quality research, with a strong emphasis on China-related studies. For years, the School and its faculty members have consistently been recognized for their intellectual contributions both locally and internationally. Currently, we have four research centers.
Center for Chinese Linguistics
As a major center in the global research network of the Chinese language, the Center for Chinese Linguistics promotes the study of the history and evolution of the Chinese language, with an emphasis on the theoretical implications of investigation as well as its relevance to practical applications.
Personnel at the center consist of the linguistics faculty and also visiting scholars in the Division of Humanities, School of Humanities and Social Science. The center aims at achieving the following objectives:
- To conduct intensive research on the Chinese language.
- To house major databases and corpuses pertaining to languages in China.
- To offer a rigorous postgraduate program in Chinese linguistics.
- To make expertise in the Center available to other teaching and research units at HKUST, as well as to society at large.
- To serve as a regional hub in the study of Chinese.

The South China Research Center
The South China Research Center (SCRC) is an institution under the Division of Humanities, in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). It was set up in 1997 to establish and promote academic exchange between scholars and institutions in South China studies. A branch office at the HKUST Fok Ying Tung Graduate School in Nansha, Guangzhou, focusing on research of the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region, was established in 2007. Resource Stations collect many sensitive primary source materials that would quickly disappear if not properly recorded. The SCRC also records events, particularly rituals, that are undergoing rapid changes due to modernization, and catalogues and publishes collected materials. Through the South China Research Resource Station System, we are actively engaged in academic collaboration with the following institutions: Sun Yat-Sen University, Jiangxi Normal University, Institute of Chaozhou Studies, Xiamen University and Jiaying University.

Established in mid-2019 and housed within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Center seeks to foster interdisciplinary and multi-method research and teaching on global China. Leveraging Hong Kong’s international reputation and position as a global city, GCC is a world-class hub of cutting-edge scholarship and education on global China. Internationally, GCC is building collaborative ties with other centers on global China in North America, Europe and Australia. Within Asia, the center acts as a regional platform for scholar exchange in Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, and establishes dialogue with schools in China around potential partnerships.
