WHAT IS OBE?

“Outcome-Based Education means starting with a clear picture of what is important for students to be able to do, then organizing the curriculum, instruction, and assessment to make sure that this learning ultimately happens.” (Spady, 1994)

The curriculum development process used where learning outcomes are the starting point is a form of Backward Design. The four key stages in developing curricula are:

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results
(Where do we want to be?)

Stage 2: Map Current Status
(Where are we now?)

Stage 3: Determine Acceptable Evidence
(How will we know when we have arrived?)

Stage 4: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction
(How will we get there?)
