SOSC 3700 Application

This course is for students admitted before 2021 only.

The course is intended to prepare students for their Capstone Project by allowing them to apply the skills they have learned in their quantitative methods courses in a real-world setting.

QSA students MUST enroll SOSC 3700 twice in order to meet the graduation requirement. ALL students are strongly advised to complete a total of two credits SOSC 3700 within their 3rd Year in HKUST. Once the application to enroll in SOSC 3700 is approved, applicants must still enroll in the class via the SIS. The Program will not enroll students, only approve the applications and notify the course instructor(s) that everything is in order and that the course instructor(s) should allow the enrollment when applicants request it in the SIS.

 

Eligibility

All QSA students who have a passing grade in SOSC 2400 are eligible.

Areas for SOSC 3700 Quantitative Social Analysis Practicum:

  1. Participating in a Faculty Research Project
  2. Internship (Please refer to the SHSS Internship)
  3. Independent Project (Please refer to QSA Specific Courses for details)
  4. UROP

Terms and Conditions

 

Before application

 

  1. Applicants are expected to read through all the information in this website before starting the application.
  2. Applicants must check if they meet the application eligibilities before application. Any applications failed to meet the eligibilities and requirements indicated by the School and/or QSA Program will not be considered.

 

After application

 

  1. Applicants should check ITSC email regularly and pay attention to all the deadlines as stipulated.
  2. Applicants should manage to complete the enrollment procedure independently before deadline upon reading the guidelines and instructions thoroughly.
  3. Students who skip the application procedure and apply in SIS will fail the course.

 

Enrollment Criteria

 

Applicable to Area 1

Applicants must prove the chosen area is QSA-related with certain documents. Applicants must have agreement with a faculty member to supervise BEFORE applying, and document that agreement in the application by including a copy of relevant correspondence.

 

Applicable to Area 2

Applicants must prove the chosen area is QSA-related with certain documents.

 

Applicable to Area 3

The Independent Project will ONLY be available during the Fall and Spring terms. Applicants should aware of the change of course code when enrolling for Independent Project.

 

Semester Fall Spring    
Course Code SOSC 3700A (LA1) SOSC 3700B (LA1)    

 

All year 3 QSA students will be pre-enrolled into SOSC 3700A (LA1) in Fall and/or SOSC 3700B (LA1) in Spring if they have not completed the course(s).

Students who wish to enroll the course via Area 3 would need to pay attention to the course schedule and arrangement. To avoid technical issues happened on the SIS system, those who have taken SOSC 3700A will NOT be able to enroll the course via Area 3 in Fall semester, or vice versa. Thus, we encourage students to plan for the enrollment of SOSC 3700A and SOSC 3700B carefully before applying.

 

Applicable to Area 4

Applicants must prove the chosen area is QSA-related with certain documents. Students may request to use UROP 1100 and/or UROP courses of higher level to substitute for SOSC 3700A/B upon approval by the program office.

Area 1

All applicants must submit all required documents listed below on or before the deadline.

 

Area 2

Please refer to the SHSS Internship.

 

Area 3

Applicants should enroll through SIS system, however, should also submit an application.

 

Area 4

All applicants must submit the application on or before the deadline.

 

 

Application Timeline

To avoid technical issues happened on the SIS system, those who have taken SOSC 3700A will NOT be able to enroll the course in Fall semester, or vice versa. Thus, we encourage students to plan for the enrollment of SOSC 3700A and SOSC 3700B carefully before applying.
